Exposing Puppy Mills*** PG-13 Rating
Puppy Mills - basically evil breeders that keep dogs in inhumane, factory-like,unhealthy, cooped-up conditions - the dogs go unsold - often there are killed. Often these Mills work directly with Pet Stores and anyone with a dog is familiar with the conditions even at the Pet Store aren't suitable for a dog. the Dog Whisperer recently did a special episode - going undercover with LCA advocates that operate in this sphere of dog help and Mill investigations. Even many state laws/codes even still allow conditions that would make any dog lover sick. Here is more information on how to help http://www.prisonersofgreed.org/Commercial-kennel-facts.html These people pass themselves off as legitimate breeders.
So before getting your next dog consider a Rescue Shelter or a Breeder you know and have researched. Unscrupulous puppy mills and pet stores will use a web-site and other means to put up a smoke-screen to pervert the truth. Its a conundrum; we need to save and help these animals but shut them down Mills and Stores participating in this methodology at the same time.
These pictures are literally worth a 1000 words. Please feel free to contact us if you have questions about getting a new dog , training a current dog, or having to give up a dog.

Protection for Your Puppy's Paws
Now that we are fully into the winter wonderland season, dogs need protection form the elements just like their owners. Pay attention to your dog to see if he/she has a sensitivity to the cold. Maybe you and your dog could take shorter walks throughout the day. If sensitivity is at an extreme, you may want to look into providing boots for your dog. Consult your vet and make sure the boots are properly sized. For dogs that can withstand the cold, owners may want to walk more in the snow and grass rather than the sidewalks. It is recommended that you wash the dogs paws when returning indoors with warm water. This will protect your dog from getting dry cracking paws. A moisturizing balm may be applied to help keep the paws in good condition. Your local Vet could provide you with recommended brands and more extensive instructions for your four legged friends. Stay safe and warm!!!

Today's Meetup...
Thank you all who attended are first Meetup! We will be posting pictures shortly and though we had a smaller group then anticipated because of weather and holiday travel, but we would like to hold our next January Meetup in an area determined by group consensus.
Smaller dogs that are not breed for winter activity should be equipped with proper doggie attire to keep them warm and dry. Look for pictures shortly...

Decorations of Holiday Cheer!!!
Throughout the land, homes are donned with decorations galore. This time of the season is wonderful to experience. We would like to remind you that some holiday plants are beautiful to visually experience, but can cause harmful effects to your dog if eaten or brushed against. Some of these plants are the Poinsettia and the Mistletoe. Poinsettia's sap can cause skin or mouth irritation or vomiting if repeatedly come in contact. It is recommended that you wash the area with soap and water then contact your vet or poison control. Mistletoe's berries can also create vomiting, diarrhea, or increase in respiratory rate. So if eaten, contact your vet and poison control as well.
So decorate your home in holiday cheer, and celebrate home, health, and happiness, but please be responsible for making your home safe for all members of the family!
The medical symptoms and reaction procedures are only suggestions. Please consult your vet for proper medical care for your dog.

wind, cold, walking, and the Post Office
As much as the elements and typical Boston winter weather is kicking-in, getting your dog the proper amount of exercise per day - at least 45 minutes in the morning and based on the breed and age, at least two more times for an extended (half hour+) period of time is very important to their health, behavior, and happiness. Some breeds (typically smaller dogs) require a coat or jacket, others are genetically protected from the elements - kind of like the US Postal Service - "neither rain, sleet, nor snow" should percent you from getting your dog outside. Just try not to end up at the wrong address or get lost. Cheers.

Meetup location for 12/23 and future locations...
Our first Meetup is being held on the afternoon of 12/23. We have not yet confirmed, but have a tentative location of the Boston Common for our location We have approval for that afternoon for off leash activities but here is the normal policy:
There is also a movement within the city by advocates and legislatures to allow for a permanent, all-hours portion of the Common (the Oldest Pulbic Park in the US,) for dogs to be off leash. As an aside - it used to be used for all forms of domesticated animals and crops - Anyway, we would love to hear your suggestions and we know that though a majority of our members and clients and Boston based, our geographic footprint of members extends to greater Boston. We also value the insight of members on recommendations for other sites because we all love to get out of the city and off leash and explore new locations. Personally, I enjoy Callahan State Park in Framingham, MA which always has a large dog congregation present due to its open fields, miles of trails, a centralized pond for swimming, different terrain, and dog-friendly environment. I would also like to think about car pooling for outings beyond Boston city limits as its is economical, green, some members don't have vehicles, and getting there is sometimes half the fun!! So suggests are welcome here - just post as a comment and/or on the Meetup homepage www.meetup.com.boston.dogs.organization/ If you are a client here of BDO please do join the Meetup Group as well. Here is a list of well-known dog parks in Boston that you may want to check out. http://www.boston.com/travel/explorene/specials/pets/dog_parks/ One word of caution is we are seeing a lot of kennel cough and other illnesses being transmitted. So please don't take your dog to a group setting if he/she if sick and if you need a list of recommended vets in the area please contact us for the most cost effective and well regarded Vets.
And at our Meetup maybe you will even see a few Boston Red Sox Collars or even a player and his pouch.
We are also still looking for several professional paid and intern volunteer positions such as an accounting, law, IT, and dog professionals in general. Some of these positions are Board of Director level opportunities and as always we love to have even a couple hours per month of pro-bono work from people within their field. Please email info@boston-dogs.com is interested or for more information.

a little physical realignment
Using your hands, raise your dogs tail gently to a straight (parallel with the ground,) and tilt his head upwards about 20degrees above the horizon. This physical change will signal a mental change in the brain calming your dog and giving him more self confidence and happiness!

A New Era: BuyWithMe -- Our Advertisement -- the Boston Globe - www.boston.com
To this point Boston-dogs.org has limited its exposure via grassroots, social media, and viral marketing. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we have a limited financial budget constraints to work within, but yesterday we have entered a new era at BDO. Still stringently adherent to our Mission Statement, we provide the highest quality, lowest cost, unique walking, training, and other services to dogs and their owners with the goal of giving back to four other larger nonprofit dogs organizations (found on our website.) We also continue to volunteer at these organizations, personally sponsor dogs, and donate our own money as well as - most importantly - a portion of ALL proceeds generated from BDO We have to until yesterday utilized word-of-mouth, Blogging, FaceBook Causes and accompanying page (found on FB by typing in the search bar AND the Causes section: boston-dogs.com,) FaceBook advertisements, Twitter www.twitter.com/bostoniandogs , YouTube publishing of our activities with dogs, and fostering relationships with our benefactors.
Now we are corporate partners of BuyWithMe and and closing other corporate sponsorships in the upcoming days and partnering with other dog nonprofit and for profit organizations. These will be annouced as they are finalized. The bottom-line: more dogs get the chance to be healthy happy, and live in safe, caring homes with dog educated owners. We also, in conjunction with our friends at BWM, placed our first advertisement on the Boston Globes' website www.boston.com
As alluded to above, we also appeared in the Boston Globe (subsidiary of the New York Times )via their website.
As mentioned, we are still expanding through our own efforts and via the generosity and pro bono impact of like minded people and corporations that take their community and altruistic giving - in any form - seriously. Please contact us at info@boston-dogs.com
